Does anyone NOT like stationery?
It is around this time of year more than any other when the build up to the London Stationery Show and National Stationery Week is getting underway, that I really realise what an amazing business the stationery market is.
The nature of the products is such that it’s not like work at all – ok, that might be over doing it a bit! – and I am constantly struck by how readily people openly admit to loving stationery.
But perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised when so many of the products look so good – this is after all where fashion meets function, and most people’s relationship with the products starts when they are very young.
It’s therefore disturbing to keep on hearing that no one writes by hand anymore (which is a myth) and to learn that Finland and a number of states in the USA no longer insist that handwriting is on the curriculum for children.
They are so wrong – being able to write, and learning to do so as a child is as important as learning to use a keyboard, even in an increasingly digital age.
